Research - Watercolor Gem attempt

Zentangle Inspired Art with Gems | Watercolor Gemstones with Cracks - 03/05/20

This video shows how someone managed to get some really interesting gems by using water colours,
i wanted to try and get the blending that they have managed to accomplish. I don't think they used
watercolor pencils but i was confident that i could find a way to follow along. I like how they used three
different colours, this made it much easier to see how each colour should be applied.

They started off by just building up the layers of water colours, until they reached a point that showed
a clear highlight in each gem.

I tried to follow along using a very similar color scheme but just using different shapes, and one more
then what they used. I started off with a very light blue, making sure to pick an edge of the circle to
concentrate it the most. This will be the initial guide on where to add the rest of my water colours.

I then moved onto adding the first colours for the next gems, one will be green and the other two will
be different variants of a red and orange gem. I also added the second layer of blue to the big gem,
this one was much darker and i started to feel like i went wrong somewhere as it looks very messy.

Whilst the blue was drying i added the second layer for each of the other gems, using a darker green
and an orange for the furthest right gem. The reason I have an orange and red gem is I wanted to see
how each would react by using them in a different order.

Once the blue was dry and I added a layer of dark purple, like the person in the video did. I tried to
make sure to not go into the light area i had created too much, the purple works very well with the
blue, considering i only used one purple at this stage it looks like i have used two when you look at
the variation in shade. All of the watercolours were applied using the paint directly placed on the
brush technique I discovered and tested in other concept work.

I then moved onto adding another layer of colour to the other gems, the green was using the same
colour and at the time i couldn't figure out why it wasn't getting darker like in the video demonstration.
This was using the darkest green that i had felt a bit disheartened that i would fail this quickly into it. I
added two different reds to the other gems, the furthest one on the right really stood out at this point, i
still feel like it was too much red at that point but it works for now. It's hard to guess what each colour
will look like before it's placed because of my lack of experience in using water colours.

I focused more on the green at this stage in the picture, the blue was still very wet because of its size
on the page. When i added more red to both of the other gems it made them look a bit worse
somehow. I think I just spread the paint out too thin and ruined them. I added some yellow and a light
green to the highlight point on the green gem to help make the other side look darker, this worked a
little bit. I also added another layer of green to the right side of the gem and it made it a little bit
darker, not where it should have been at this point.

To make the gems stand out more, I went over the edges with a black drawing pen. Overall I think this
did help to focus the colour down into that area. I also added a very light purple to the blue gem, just
to help it mix and blend within the light blue already there.

This was a big step for the blue and green gem, i added the darkest blue that I had to it and it's
starting to look pretty good in my opinion. I also added another layer of green to still try and darken it.
The other gems are pretty much ruined as i don't really know who to get yellow, red and orange to
blend well together.

This was the final change I made with the gems, I mixed some of the blue and green with black. I wish
i had thought of this before I applied so many layers of green and blue to the page. Using a little bit of
black helped to darken the colour very fast and to a degree that I needed for the gemstones.

Overall, they are not the best and they look pretty bad compared to the ones in the video but i feel
like i have learnt  a lot about blending watercolors and i look forward to applying this to a bigger
picture in the future.
